Baseline Report: Crop and Livestock Dynamics in Makueni and Nandi Counties

Farmers in Kenya are navigating a climate ‘breaking point,’ and agricultural insurance may prove to be their lifeline. With GIZ and ACRE Africa, we are rolling out training and subsidies in Makueni and Nandi counties to foster resilience and inspire trust in this essential tool.

With our partners, we conducted a baseline study to understand farmers’ perceptions of agricultural insurance and help improve our programming as well as measure our impact further down the line.

Over the course of 2024, Clim-Eat reached over 1800 farmers. And in doing this work, we are learning that knowledge and trust are pivotal. In Makueni and Nandi counties, the uptake of agricultural insurance is steadily increasing, and awareness is growing. However, farmers’ general hesitation underscores the dire need for clear communication.

Next steps:

  • Build trust with transparent communication and quicker pay-outs.
  • Expand insurance to cover livestock and bundle it with seeds for added value.
  • Incentivize adoption through subsidies and training.

The baseline report, written by Daan Schuttenbelt, Wiebe Smit, and Kevin Gitau Ng’ang’a, provides an overview of agricultural insurance in Kenya.
