Risk Mitigation through Agricultural Insurance in Makueni and Nandi Counties: An analysis from one pilot season

Climate variability continues to threaten smallholder farmers’ livelihoods, making effective risk management tools more urgent than ever. This midline report from Clim-Eat, GIZ, and ACRE Africa examines the first pilot season of an agricultural insurance programme in Makueni County and Nandi County. Drawing on payout data and farmer interviews, the analysis explores how insurance coverage helped farmers cope with climate-related crop losses and strengthen their resilience.

The findings show that insurance can significantly reduce financial risk, especially during moderate to severe losses while providing peace of mind and enabling farmers to continue investing in their farms. The report also highlights lessons for scaling inclusive insurance solutions, including the importance of transparency, farmer education, and timely payouts.
