Exploring the Nexus: Climate Change and Sustainable Healthy Diets
In 2023 and 2024, the Netherlands Working Group on International Nutrition (NWGN) platform centred its discussions on the critical intersection of climate change and sustainable healthy diets, with a particular focus on animal-sourced foods (ASFs). This dialogue reflected the ongoing protein transition debate in the Netherlands while recognizing the unique challenges and contexts of low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), where a shift to plant-based proteins may not always be feasible.
Driving the Dialogue Forward: Events and Outcomes
In March 2024, NWGN and the Netherlands Food Partnership (NFP) co-organized the event ‘Operationalizing Sustainable Healthy Diets in the Context of Climate Change.’ This gathering explored the role of ASFs in sustainable diets within LMICs, bringing together experts, NWGN members, and key stakeholders to share insights. The discussions led to the development of a comprehensive position paper designed to guide NWGN members and stakeholders on the production and consumption of ASFs. The final position paper was unveiled at this year’s World Food Day (WFD) in October 2024, co-hosted by the NFP. During this event, the paper was deliberated with a diverse group of experts and stakeholders, further shaping its relevance and impact. Read their blog about WFD 2024 here.
Building Bridges for Change: Stimulating Policy and Practice
This position paper, crafted by the NWGN in collaboration with Clim-Eat, aims to foster meaningful dialogue around ASF consumption in LMICs. By engaging the Dutch government, ministries, embassies, and our members and partners, the initiative seeks to drive actionable outcomes in (1) policies, (2) programs, and (3) international collaboration. The goal is to address the nutritional needs of vulnerable populations while aligning the often-missed connection between nutrition and global climate change objectives.
