Technical brief on soil health in Tanzania highlighting challenges and lessons from global soil management insights

Digging Deeper into Soil Health: From Global Insights to Tanzania’s Challenges

Late last year, Clim-Eat dug deep and explored soil health as a critical but often overlooked factor in global food security in a feature for World Soil Day. Now, we’re digging deeper, and the conversation continues with a new technical brief focusing on soil health in Tanzania’s Southern Highlands, where declining soil fertility, acidification, and nutrient depletion present significant challenges to agricultural productivity.

Heavy reliance on inorganic fertilizers—without complementary soil health practices—has contributed to long-term degradation. While national policies emphasize integrated soil health strategies, gaps in implementation remain. Addressing these challenges requires targeted fertilizer strategies, improved soil conservation practices, and enhanced advisory services to ensure long-term agricultural sustainability.
