Investment, Irrigation, Digitalization and Social Protection – the top enablers to building thriving and climate-resilient African food systems
A side-event at The Africa Climate Summit, Nairobi
Join this session as we unveil a blueprint for sustainable agriculture that stands resilient against the forces of change.
Agriculture is a cornerstone of the economies of most countries in Sub-Saharan Africa and yet it is dominated by climate-vulnerable rainfed systems. Current adaptation efforts across the continent are insufficient to meet the climate challenge.
This event sees the launch of a joint paper by 20 authors on priorities for climate change adaptation in Africa, with seven key priorities for investment and policy action identified: Four are related to finance and investment, covering private and public sector investment, financial governance and climate finance. Two covered game-changing technologies: the digitalisation of the food system and sustainable irrigation, the latter to reduce the level of reliance on rainfed agriculture. The final one is productive social safety nets, given the lack of opportunities for the poorest of the rural poor.
Join this session as we unveil a blueprint for sustainable agriculture that stands resilient against the forces of change. Through collaboration and strategic action, we have the power to reshape the narrative of African agriculture and secure a nourished and prosperous future.
Event objective
- Launch of adaptation paper, highlighting key adaptation measures for African farmers and agribusinesses to stimulate climate resilient food systems throughout the continent
- Identify key investment and policy strengthening options to simulate climate-resilient food system.
