About

The Voices for Just Rural Transitions

There is a critical need to transition to food systems that are more resilient, equitable and environmentally sustainable, while also ensuring the transition itself is fair and inclusive, particularly to those farming on the frontlines of climate change.

The Voices for Just Rural Transitions (Voices4JRT) initiative places the voices of farmers and frontline communities at the heart of food system transitions, amplifying local perspectives and shifting agricultural policy.

We aim to bring together farmers, Indigenous communities, and civil society organisations in Brazil, Tanzania, and Indonesia to ensure local voices contribute to the global transition to climate-smart, sustainable food systems for all.

RESOURCES & CASE STUDIES

These resources highlight the research, analysis and tools available to support just rural transitions and promote innovative policy pathways that can transform global and local food systems to meet sustainable development, climate and biodiversity goals.

We are pleased to continue housing several resources created and published during a previous phase of the Just Rural Transition initiative, led by Meridian Institute.

Global Policy Dialogue for Sustainable Agriculture

Country Case Study Compendiums are a product of the Global Policy Dialogue for Sustainable Agriculture. Launched by the United Kingdom and the World Bank in January 2021, the Policy Dialogue builds momentum on policy reforms for sustainable agriculture and food systems. It provides a forum for governments to share experiences and learning, facilitate partnerships, and build global ambition on reforms. Over 45 countries from the Global North and Global South have participated in the Policy Dialogue to date.

The first edition, released in 2022, provides a Chairs’ Summary of Policy Dialogue Workshops and a lead set of sample briefs from six countries. A second edition, released in 2023, includes a Chairs’ Summary; a set of three briefing notes on ‘Policy Pathways to Sustainable Agriculture’; and a set of fourteen country case studies of ‘Policy in Action’ endorsed by participating countries.
