Mic is ON: Voices from the Field

The Voices for Just Rural Transitions

Across countries and contexts, the Voices for Just Rural Transitions (V4JRT) initiative is working to ensure that farmers’ voices are not only heard, but shape the policies that affect their lives. From local communities to national dialogues and global platforms, these country stories highlight how lived experiences, local knowledge, and multi-stakeholder engagement come together to inform more inclusive, resilient, and just food systems.

Indonesia: Turning the mic on

In Pati, Central Java, Indonesia, farmers, civil society, and policymakers came together to explore how public support to food and agriculture can better reflect realities on the ground. Through a Photovoice exhibition, farmers shared their lived experiences, creating space for dialogue, building trust across stakeholders, and laying the foundation for more inclusive and responsive policy processes.

Brazil: Listening across systems

In Brazil, the Mic is ON across the system — from national policy discussions in Brasília to field visits in Arinos. By engaging with government institutions, farmer organisations, and local communities, the work connects policy with lived realities, highlighting how access to credit, public programmes, and support services shape farmers’ experiences. These insights help inform more inclusive and effective approaches to agricultural policy and subsidy reform.

Philippines: South–South learning workshop

In Philippines, the Mic is ON for global exchange — bringing together diverse stakeholders for a South–South learning workshop on repurposing public support for climate and soil health. Drawing on lessons from Malawi, Brazil, and Indonesia, the discussion connected global insights with the Philippine context, exploring both the opportunities and the real bottlenecks in advancing more sustainable and resilient food systems.
