What can the world learn from Brazil’s support for family farmers?

This discussion starter explores what the world can learn from Brazil’s support for family farmers, as part of Clim-Eat’s Voices for Just Rural Transitions (Voices4JRT) project. From subsidised credit to school feeding programmes, Brazil has built a comprehensive policy framework to support smallholders, placing food security and rural livelihoods at the centre of agricultural policy.

At the same time, the research highlights key challenges around access and inclusion, and points to opportunities to repurpose public support to better reach the most marginalised farmers and scale more sustainable solutions. Brazil’s experience offers valuable insights for countries looking to design more inclusive, resilient, and effective food systems.
